An Introduction to Boros

 

Boros, to me, has always been a very interesting and versatile character especially at the public level. This is because there are so many ways of playing him (e.g. pure INT, weapon damage, hybrid etc.). Recently I have been inspired by highdrator's play with boros, and his use of a single item - Impact Dial. This item has loads of uses on a character like boros - you can use it to manipulate positioning for your bola, it can be used to escape battles (and start them as a matter of fact), and for offensive purposes too.

 

By no means am I a good player at Aeon of storms, but I feel like I have a certain amount of knowledge in order to create a guide on Boros. (Any feedback on items would be appreciated). By the way, the formatting won't be great as this is my first article on aeon of storms.

 

Talents

 

Personally, in the build that I am going to be discussing, Veteran isn't the most important talent to have.

• Zeal (+13% movement speed when you are above 70 % hp)
  
• +6 armour
  
• Swiftness (+6% movement speed)
  
• 180 health
  
• +12% cooldown reduction
  

The talent that you want here is zeal (i'm not really bothered about the rest lol). The movement speed that it gives really helps when ganking and when your trying to chase somebody down with impact dial + ss+ ult.

 

Items

 

During Early game I sometimes run into mana problems hence why I start with a duran's pendant.

In my opinion, Gravity Edge is a core mid game item. It gives movement speed, a crap load of INT, and a bit of weapon damage. Other people prefer Masamune first whilst others prefer grav edge first, but the INT that grav edge provides is a real damage booster to your bola and ss+ult. Furthermore, this item is a must in late game because of it's unique. Either way you should get both Masamune and Grav Edge during your mid-late game.

Good guide overall, I disagree with the weapon speed talent choice though. You are very rarely going to be attacking the same target multiple times in a row to benefit from the AS, and your damage will come from spells and omni, so I feel survivability/utility/damage talents would be better.

I would say you dont really need (drawing a blank, The cloaking every 4 atks item) i would go with something maybe a little more damage. Perhaps Khali Blade.

i used to use impact dial alot but i found a preference in getting Phantom Menace. The components boost your ult damage a bit and once you complete it the 50 Agi is nice to have plus the movement speed Passive makes bolaing easier and you can drag max range no problem. (i use zeal and swiftness talents) Early-Mid I dont play very agressive. I use phantom to support allies and initiate where i can.

after that depending on what im up against i either get more damage or INT. If im planning on late game i go ahead and build up Ihan stacks and sell it later replacing with grav edge. Ihan great for extra life and the regen solves any Energy issue you could potentially have. The thing i like most about him is hes extremely adaptable so you can go many variations with him :)

Interesting post novaprime, I have tried phantom menace and the speed is nice. I agree with agressors perhaps being slightly pointless, but I do like it's unique and the stats that it gives. I'll have to experiment with other items.

You can get away fairly easily. Mainly Bola cool down is less then Dial so just seems beneficial you use the Passive from Phantom and get right back in the action.

When i see a Boros player who has the right idea but poor execution i just shake my head, I ask why they just stand there and they say Dial is on Cooldown he cant Bola >.<

Nice guide, but you can probably change some talents around. Lately DPS borros is very weak late game and is often very squishy, so if a tank buys barb or even if a nova buys it then you are often killing yourself.

 

In being a experienced borros player i suggest getting that vital intelligence for his storm and his bola which if you nail it can practically kill those already squishy heroes like ghost with or with cloke on.

 

talents: i use the same talents that spooky used which is

- 180 health

- 8 armor

- Zeal

- 12% cooldown reduction

- 1.2 energy regen (u may consider sth else instead, but I like spamming bolas and energy regen is sth I need early-mid game)

- Swiftness

and i go for the build i like to get a lot of CD with that intel and dps mixed in. This build makes your storm and bola much stronger and gives enough dps to kill with your ulti.

 

-Durans Pendant

 

-Gravity edge (nice speed and intel boost)

 

-Ihan Crystal (Sell later once stacked and use the extra money on masamune or another item)

 

-Masamune (extra speed and makes your ulti so much more powerful, allowing you to bola and do more damage as you can drag faster and ulti to completely own them)

 

-Aggressors Guise (more agility and CD along with masamune helps a lot)---- can sell pendant for masamune or here as you got enough energy.

 

Two Options here: either Argus Crystal or Pyre

 

If your bola is very good and the enemy have not got much spell resist then go for argus, as it increases damage on your bola and storm like crazy.

If your bola is weak and the enemy have a Leo or a fast hero and so your bola is hard to nail then go for pyre as you can shred enemy heros apart with it.

 

-Situational (you can go for Yamamoto or HP and can get things like barbed for shadow or nova. But depends on the game)

 

Throughout this build you should be jungling and Always be buying BlinkMoth Serum as the CD is vital.

 

 

i think you are better off getting the bonus speed and true damage from edge then buying dial as you can gank and chase better and your spell damage becomes lethal. But if you want dial then get it before edge for that extra intel and sell it later.

One point- if u go pendant i dont feel u need energy talent, even more- ull going int so ur mana issues will be covered. Even i dont like energy talent that later is a waste (if u go some int) - to be worth it u would need to be very aggresive, ganking much - which is high risk- u dont focus on farm for strong timing of lvl 6-7 boros (lvl 7esp) and midgame. In my build i prefer dmg talent

 

Early game int scales more natural for boros, and give u more often initiation, without int or energy talent(crap) u dont have even mana for combo, good boros - good and often bolas, best skill of this hero. Then i feel like switching in mid-game to normal dps (massamune for example) is better. I like really much hybrid build that have very strong timings in game. Balancing between int-dps should be made regarding ur comp, enemy comp. Vs casters int or tank/int is stronger, vs enemy carries depend, most time aa, vs tanks - aa. If u have something in team that clumps enemies - int- spellstorm. Ofc u can go even full or almost full int. Some short conclusions.

 

Some other items viable for boros u didnt mention (lethal barb- max ias, khali blade, darwin, parralax- taser can counter boros hard, ihan crystal- if u have some spear money and wanna little more adv later and u're going more int on boros., SHC, argus - full int boros, shadowmourne- fighting vs other strong aa carry) Ok items - foe, taser (if ur team really needs it), axe- if ur team dont have any and u need it. Speaking of aggresor guise - its ok, but i dont like it that much (chrono counters, dont give any real dmg, item that is semi good in everything)

these other items are good but you do not need leach on borros. this is assured as when yu have such high MS then you often bola ulti and run out. leach is a waste of a item, the fact is that with Borros you will not be doing very little if any aa as you will deal dmg with ulti and spell, thus why i believe lethal barb is not that great of an item on him although his passive gives crit.

 

Again, having this early intel item helps you keep up in mana and allows you to lane without going back, you do not have to go back to refill till about lvl 6-7 and that is usually for health, this talent really helps to sustain borros in the early stages and although later it is useless but early is what counts as it is the only way to get to those higher stages in the build.

 

 

I really only have the Aggressors guise for the CD and the agility which provides more dps and speed which always helps.

 

For the situational all of those items are viable but i only gave a few suggestions you are right, those items are all fine if your team needs it.

 

 

With this build of mine you reach 500 intel so the Burning blade deals 250 dmg per stack after each hit which often gets you the kills itself.

 

But i do not advise full intel as late game enemies like Leo and Crackling become super fast, making it almost impossible to nail a bola and however much speed you have, you wont be able to keep up with the storm.

 

Mass intel becomes almost useless their and more useless then mass dps borros. Having nice intel on a borros with dps has its many benefits as you just boost the extra damage you are dealing on the enemy hero.

 

Take ghost for example when cloked, you can kill him with a bola and chasing with storm on, and the storm provides extra protection vs the stun and nuke making ghost completely useless.

among your choices only boros got a skillshot. so therefore boros is harder to master.

right now, impact dial boros is not as useful as before because of the bola break range.

at full bola range and impact dial, your target breaks off the bola quite a distance from boros himself.

 

now if youre going to use impact dial before bola then yes it is viable since it closes the gap and your bola will reach its target.

Slight derail but having skillshots certainly has an influence on how hard a hero is, but it's not the whole story. If you take dota, Chen doesnt have a skill shot and he is one of the hardest heroes to master (if you want an AoS example Tass doesn't have a skill shot and he's certainly harder than Toxi who has one).

my attempt to solve mana issues of boros was getting superheated mantle.

reasoning:

superheated mantle intended to replace early game spellstorm, which i usually keep at level 1 since its so mana hungry as it levels up.

armor is rather OP nowadays. and with ss providing spell resistance, armor provides the physical resist.

component of superheated mantle is miners goggles, which gives you 5 min per 10 sec. helps in getting the second item rather fast.

also you wont need to turn on SS to farm a wave of creeps. you can just AA the creeps and pop spellstorm when needed for its spell resist or to gain DPS when you feel a kill coming.

 

before i started with

emerald mox

blinkmoth serum

1 health potion and 2 energy potions.

 

it povided very good INT boost early game to help farm and very good energy pool.

but, actualy delays the entire build since nothing on that set of starting items will ever be used late game. so youve just delayed yourself.

 

my next item is almost always gravity edge.

reasoning:

boros deals spell damage over time each hit

all skills of boros scales with INT. including OMNISLASH.

since it is NORMALLY a good idea to get spell resist when facing a boros, dealing true damage counters that.

move speed is always welcome.

 

now the rest of the build is situational. depends on who youre facing.

why?

because the best build is one that directly counters the opponent.

 

if they are mostly tanks, get pyre. sunflare. these will deal true damage as well (a portion of the spell damage)

if theyre mostly agi get armor, barbed since it returns true damage with gravity edge.

if theyre mostly casters get health as they will most likely also get gravity edge.

if they have little to no spell resist, get argus

if they have a burst caster get additional spell resist. as spellstorm cannot be on all the time. or get cerebro.
