General Overview

Raynor has 7 unit attack range, which gives him the potential to be a strong ranged dps hero. His mark is very good for amplifying his weapon damage on enemy heroes, thus making him more potent than other dps heroes. In team fights you should try to remain at the back and just deal dps, exploiting his long ranged attack and remember that Raynor doesn't have any escape mechanisms.

I choose to upgrade Q and E first, Q is great for lane harass and E provides great utility.

Laning

Raynor lanes well in the easy lane or mid, his long range allows him to remain close to his tower while still being able to last hit creeps. You can lane him in hard lane but I would highly recommend that you ward the tank creep and the rune creep, the talent build does give you good movement speed but since Raynor doesn't have any escape mechanism that might not be enough to survive ganks.

Harassment in lane is very easy, just mark the enemy hero and auto attack them a few times. I don't use silencing shot for lane harass since it uses up a lot of mana (and with these talents you won't have much mana) and doesn't do much damage until you max it. Silencing shot does provide great utility and should be used to prevent enemy heroes from using spells to escape, such as Penthos or Nova. Raynor's kill shot does a decent amount of damage even when you are not building INT, so don't be afraid to use it on a fleeing enemy hero, just be aware that it will drain most of your mana.

Raynor can also be jungled. The talent build gives you good movement speed for traversing the map quickly, and his mark allows him to kill the creep camps quickly as well. I would suggest that you consider getting one level in Marauders, they can be used to tank some damage, allowing you to sustain better in the jungle.

Items

My item build focuses on rushing weapon speed, and the items I choose all deal spell damage on auto attack. The reason I do this is because the mark amplifies your weapon damage and your spell damage from the items. The effect is very strong, and remains strong throughout the game.

My leech item is usually Darwin's Might because the extra hp helps, and the weapon speed increase from HoM isn't very useful since I am already close to the attack speed cap already.

Contamination Shard is a very strong item on Raynor, it amplifies physical damage even further and in conjunction with Shadowmourne you will be dealing a large amount of damage. However, I get CS during late game, when heroes have a lot of armour and so the effects are not as strong as they would be if I buy it in the early game. The main reason I don't buy CS in the early game is because I don't have very good weapon speed. However, you can try rushing HoM and CS in early game to really abuse the damage amp, and if you have a MK on your team who rushes CoA and Mob Mentality then you will be doing insane amounts of damage, and there really isn't a counter to that in the early game. You can simply build weapon damage and rely on your HoM active and MK to provide the weapon speed.

Remark: This dps build works great in pubs, and it is very fun to use. I don't think it would be as effective in an in house. There are other ways to build Raynor as dps, I hinted at one of them, there are many others.

Ihan(stacked)-Sunflare-Gravity-Star Fury-Pyre-Cont Shard-FoE, is what I like when doing INT-DPS, Sunflare gives insane damage and lifesteal, Star Fury, gives 30 agi + 30% weapon speed, with pyre is all you need. Cont Shard for amp and FoE for raw hp and slow, combined with Marauders is pretty annoying. Gravity for raw INT and weapon damage, 20+30

Just sayin', a Utility build with Wealth allows you to get the +25 damage item from the start. That enables raynor to have the highest weapon damage in the game. Also enables a super quick rush to flare gun, which in combination with mark......

Because of it's leech, and decent extra weapon damage, rushing for this item sets up either an int or AA build really nicely, not to mention gives you huge amounts of kills to get items that much quicker.

Its nice opening for TBone as well, to abuse his Capacitive Clip ;)

When I used to do this I would just mass some Arcbound Ravengers for attack speed, crit chance, and movement speed (at the time, they were the only stacking movement speed). Throwing in some of the +100 intelligence crystals for extra damage. It actually worked quite nicely from what I remember.

Last night (two nights ago?) I was in a game that had 2 good players and 3 people that weren't leaving on the other team, so like 20 minutes into it my team decided we should do troll builds. Playing Raynor (as normal) I had the following items:

  • Arcbound Ravenger
  • Twin Paradox Isolator
  • Shrink Ray (was stun baton until I decided I needed more int)
  • Cerebro
  • Khali Blade
  • Masamune

By the end of the game it was 3vs3 (but one person on opposite team was afk). I was dealing about 400-450 dmg/crit, and my attack speed was something like .65 before twin paradox was activated. I was also getting crits about 75% of the time. The cooldown buff on silence from cerebro was awesome, and my int wasn't to bad.

By the end of the game I had ~350 creep kills... it was very silly to me.
