SourDiesel Posted February 13, 2013 Report Share Posted February 13, 2013 Every once in a while in pub games two people will try to select the same hero and one of them will end up with someone else. In and of itself, this is not a problem, but it can become one with talents. To use an actual example. I selected rancor one game and moved into the talent screen to adjust my talents. By the time my talents were adjusted and I clicked to choose him, someone had aleady picked Rancor. I'm not sure how the game picks which hero you end up with after someone has selected the hero you're on, but I ended up with Grunty. I have no problem with Grunty and was more than happy to play him. The problem, of course, was that my talents were totally wrong, having been specced to play Rancor as a caster. I'd like to see a simple tweak that would allow talents to be changed at any point before the first creeps spawn - even after you have already selected your hero. At the time the first creeps pop your talents become locked just as they are now. Changing talents would cause all items associated with the hero to be removed from the game and the 650 minerals reissued (to prevent people from taking the +200 mineral talent and then switching talents after purchasing items or dropping items on the ground and then getting 650 minerals reissued). Alternatively, you could lock talents upon purchasing an item, but that can be problematic because it is easy to purchase an item before realizing you have the wrong hero (given that you see your chosen hero in the pool because someone else selected him). I would also consider allowing people to reselect their heroes up to the first creep wave, simply because it would help alleviate the problem of people leaving pub games when they end up with the wrong hero. I don't see any downside to the talent change, or the hero reselection for that matter. If a hero switches talents, all items they have purchased are removed from the game and they are reissued the starting 650 minerals (in case you misunderstood that, any minerals you have left or acquired since purchasing items are cleared and you're given 650 minerals). If they then choose to take the +200 mineral talent, they get the extra 200 minerals which is no different than if they had selected that talent at the outset. I think the easy solution is to simply offer a "reset hero" option that respawns the chosen hero at level 1 in the pool with no chosen talents, no items, and 650 minerals. At that point you can pick your talents like normal and recieve the appropriate bonuses. Doing it this way not only covers abusing current talents but also protects against abuse of any talents potentially added in the future. The reset feature would be disabled after the first creep wave spawned (more to protect a player from resetting their hero to nothing mid-game than because it could be used to gain an advantage). Obviously, a simple rechoose hero option works too if you're willing to give players the capability to reselect up until the first creep wave hits (don't really see a downside to allowing that).
