Sometimes, enemies have nasty combos like cyp/micro/nova that give them cheap kills early game. It is very necessary to get some countering items like taser, mantle or shrap. But if u spend your money on those defensive items, u dont have money for your main items, then u dont have enough output dmg to finish them. On the other hand, if u continue getting agressive items, u have more chance to win at 1v1 them and u have more output damage. Which choice do you prefer?

You counter them in the situation that they are already ahead. Trying to race for your own build in this situation is not possible as the opponent will outpace you.

And most counter items are utility, which not only protects you, but also your team.

 

consider that when an opponent finishes his build before you, he has revealed his hand.

Have to find a happy medium. If you are a support or tank hero then buy hard counter items and rely on your carry to finish their build. As a carry though you may sometimes have to get items that arnt hard counters but soft counters that still give good output but help counter slightly as well, such as Sliptide Scythe.

 

Like when I play Medic, I love to buy all the hard counter items like taser, Shrapnel, Barbed, Chilling Artefact, Electric Mantle, Spell Buffer, Korhal Vanguard, Nitrogen Retrofit, and Parralax(the last two are specifically medic survival) depending on whether there team is heavy in AA or Spell damage or CC. Since medics spells scale horribly with Int and the main thing she does is support her team and spam spells.

I like the point you raise but let me ask you guys, at what point do you get the shrapnel cloak? the taser? etc. Do you get it as 1st item? 2nd item? 3rd even?

 

Personally if I see a shadow, I will automatically grab shrapnel cloak as my first item. I just had shadow, and once I see an enemy shadow, ill opt for that item. Early game shrapnel is quite funny considering it does considerable damage when AA heroes only have <1000 HP.

really depends what roll your team needs you to fill though, everyone on your team doesnt need the same item.not all 5 need taser

Depends. After a while, counter items stop functioning.

 

i.e. just came out of a game, was leading 82-55 (after like 1 hour 10 minutes) We had 14% leaver bonus, Vergil, Kerrigan, Cain versus Nova/Toxi/Rory/Cyprus/something unimportant. At the hour mark, toxi got hand of mengsk and hive symbosis and executioner's axe + barbed stopped functioning because he would never take any damage. And I (the vergil) could not kill him because my R + Qs would not do enough damage and he attack moved me and almost killed me every time.

 

Same applies to shrapnel- unless you're literally always teamfighting, then the shrapnel forces an AA carry to retreat for about... 3 seconds. And even then, parallax can counter it mid-run.

 

And also, barbed: If exe axe is not apparent/outleeched, barbed is trash.

 

Taser is the one item with full-round functionality: It's always great versus casters!

Pisses me off when people tell me to get the counter items, but are too selfish/lazy to get them themselves, which results me in not getting them either and us losing.

 

This depends on the hero!

 

If I am playing Unix, me getting an executioners axe is just plain sill, especially if there is a more AA oriented teammate that could put it to better use.

No no you've got it all wrong

Finish your build so you have a baller score and scream at all your teammates till they buy the appropriate counter items for you

 

I mean think about it why should you sac part of your build when there are 4 others that can, instead make whatever hero you are playing the carry even if its not a carry hero and tell everyone else to STFU and buy counters since you're the carry. Then if you die because you don't have the right counters, you can blame your team for not supporting you and being noobs. Remember its only a team game if your team actually does what you want it to and your personal KD is all that matters in the end.
