NA Mumble IH Rankings and Team Selection (Discussion Thread)

This thread is intended for discussion of the NA Mumble IH rankings. If you would like to report the results of a game, please do it here. Please do not post screenshots in this thread.

I've put together an ELO ranking system for NA Mumble IH players. The ranking system is solely based on wins and losses. The current rankings are based on a relatively small sample of games, so they are not very accurate. They will become more accurate as additional games are added to the database. I've also added a tool that players can use to create teams that are balanced based on the rankings.

The most up-to-date rankings and the team selection tool can be found here.

Games that count toward the rankings:

Only Mumble IH games played on the NA server will count toward the rankings. Non-standard games do not count (e.g. reverse pick, free pick, beta). Games where players drop count unless both teams agree not to count the game because of extraordinary circumstances.

Reporting games to be added to the ranking:

I maintain control over the spreadsheet, however, I have given WhaleTits and Aellectris sufficient access to record the results of new games so that the rankings can be kept up to date. If Aellectris, Whale, or I are on Mumble, come tell us the results of your game. Please take a screenshot in case we ask for verification of the result. If the three of us aren't online, post a screenshot of the score screen in the reporting thread and state whether you won or lost the game. Winners are responsible for posting evidence of their wins, however, other players should serve as a check to ensure fairness. In other words, if you see a screenshot posted from a game that should not be included, please PM me or post about it here. Also, if you find an error in the recording of game results, please let me know.

Basis for the calculations:

I've included the table that I use to calculate the rankings so players can better understand the calculations involved (for more info, check out this page).

Matchups:

The ranking spreadsheet includes a tool that will create matchups based on the rankings. I have included three copies of the selection sheet so that multiple games can be organized at once. All you need to do is enter the player names and the sheet will do the rest.

I have to say...not only is the ranking largely meaningless...but I really cant see people caring enough to take and post screenshots of every game they play. Moreover, what is the incentive for people to post SS's of their losses?

That said, I've only lost one game in the past month (Crono's Starscream just doesnt cut it)...so clearly I am king.

are u sure i havenet played any games with u in september?

We've played some pubs together, but I'm pretty sure we haven't played any IHs, unless I accidentally missed a replay.

Ever the optimist. :)

Obviously the rankings are only as good as the info on which they are based, and I made no claims that the current rankings are unbiased. I don't expect players from the losing teams to have much incentive to post their screenshots, but the winners have some incentive (and really it only takes one per team). Also, it's not like we are talking about something incredibly difficult or complex: win -> take a screenshot -> spend 5 seconds posting said screenshot to forum.

Ive apparently only played one game with Tukey in it. That initial list is based only on his games. I am king bow to me.

Optimism is for suckers :P

I suppose I read too much...derr.....seriousness into the idea. I think it will be hard to maintain interest, but have fun with it...

Is this really the best way to make rankings? I don't get how Leon who is 2-0 will have a higher ranking than David 17-19. That doesn't really make sense to me... lol even if someone has a negative w/l but has more games played, to me it would make sense if david has a higher ranking?

Like how iCCup was. I think it was +100 for every win but -50 for every loss if you were in D. Like you would still get to D+ rank if you went 17-19. I think if you were in D and played a D+ you would get +125 points and then maybe -25 if you lost. Similarly with D-, +75 for a win but -125 for a loss. I forget the exact system that they had but I think with more games that would increase your ranking.... to me 2-0 is < 17-19. shrug shrug

I know this is different from iCCup but not too sure if this is the most appropriate ranking system for AoS.

it doens't make sense right now because teams are picked not based on any rating, but based on each captains ideas of ranking. thus teams end up more or less balanced, so even the best players tend to just have a 50/50 win lose. its only the players that are underrated that show up on top, and the players that are overrated that show up on the bottom.

thats why if he transitions to taking in only games played based on ranking from his team chooser, then it will become more accurate. otherwise it wont.

That makes sense I suppose, but I don't think Adversary and tukey are necessarily underrated lol.

And by team chooser meaning how the teams are formed based off the current rankings?

The team selection tool seems to be working well, with two exceptions:

1. People need to stop trolling with the tool. If people can't use the tool only for its intended purpose, I will restrict access so that only a handful of players can use the tool. This will make it harder to use the tool to organize games, so I would prefer not to do it. However, it's a major pain to fix the tool when people screw it up. Please stop screwing it up.

2. Some players are backing out of games when they don't like their assigned matchup. This means that the teams have to be completely reorganized, which slows things down significantly (especially when multiple players back out). I am considering implementing a penalty for ducking out of games once the teams are assigned. Basically, if you agree to play and then duck out once teams are assigned, I propose that player incur a 40 point rating penalty (i.e. more significant than an actual loss) and/or a temporary ban from mumble. Let me know what you think.

I think if someone backs out they should take a loss and point deduction. Kind of how AoS has it when the rating drops substantially when a person leaves/ragequits from the game.

*cough* Demi
